WWR report: Celebrate!

by on May 9, 2014

Lisa's grad goodies Here’s Lisa at the clubhouse where we showered her with treats to celebrate her grad from the faculty of education.

The party was Cheryl’s idea–note the hand-lettered sign and the thoughtful purchase of enough chocolate cupcakes for all of us to share.

Julia donated the Cheezies, but Lisa did not feel the need to share them. Can’t blame her–it’s been a long haul–besides, she’s a teacher now and her arbitrary decisions must be obeyed.

Seems like educators are beginning to dominate our club. Earlier, on the ride around town, we stopped in to see bikejo’s gardening project at a local school. garden partyHard to resist resting on the raised beds, but we did manage to leave without filling our pockets with prime compost.

1. Hopefully you don’t need to be reminded that Mother’s Day is celebrated this Sunday, May 11th. An in-depth survey of WWR riders reveals very modest expectations–Cheryl just got a new bike so she doesn’t anticipate receiving any more gifts in this decade. Cindy expects breakfast in bed (with coffee!) but Lisa & Julia seem content with whatever comes their way. If you’re agonizing over a gift for a mom who bikes, you can’t go wrong with the purchase of chocolate cupcakes, blinky lights, or more merino. Another possibility is the must-have accessory of the season–the buff scarf. Cindy displays her one and only buff in the image below.

2. Athena Bike Club Spring Ride 2014 is being planned for the May Long Weekend. That’s right–the Spring Ride is back and less organized than ever before! Actually, there is a plan emerging that involves driving down to the States on Friday night, booking hotel rooms and riding on paved trails. If that appeals to you, be sure to get in touch with Cheryl ASAP so that rides can be organized and plans finalized.

3. Lisa reports that she enjoyed her ride to Plum Coulee last weekend with Paul & Johnny, but she wished more Athena club members would show up for the Saturday breakfast ride. Sounds like this Saturday (May 10th) will be one of the warmest days in Manitoba in the past 7 months (I kid you not!), so if you fancy a ride, just show up at HQ by 9 a.m. Wind direction will determine the destination–celebrate spring in Manitoba!

Oh, you guys ARE actually planning a weekend. Sorry, I hope I didn’t create a conflict with the race. You’re more than welcome if you can make it back by 3:45 on Sunday, but if not, it’ll have a manlier flavour I guess.
    Cheers, Franklin
